About the Artist:
Growing up on a farm in Tennessee, Jennifer Ingram Mumby says she was seldom bored as a child. She was always drawing, playing with color, redecorating her room and making elaborate living spaces for her Barbies. She also loved to read, and anxiously awaited the delivery of new titles from the Bluegrass Regional Library every few weeks to one of the cupboards at the hardware store in their tiny farming community. Being the daughter of a teacher, a lot of the summer was spent in her school library while her mother was teaching “Headstart”, the precursor to school kindergarten. She also treasured her set of encyclopedia (the precursor to the internet) where she could find information on almost any topic her young self could dream up. Inside those books she could be transported to faraway places, see photos of dolls from around the world, or look up exotic animals that certainly didn’t live on the farm. Some of her favorite books were the Wizard of Oz series (did you know there was more than one book?!?) and Charlotte’s Web. As a teen she read Gone with the Wind in three days. Some of her adult favorites are The Glass Castle, The Boys in the Boat and most recently The Many Lives of Mama Love.
Jennifer studied Communications in college with minors in Art and English, and worked on and off Music Row in Advertising and print production for several years after college. She enjoyed working with clients from Nashville to New York, until a job offer took Jennifer and her husband John to Atlanta for the next 22 years. They both worked in sales and traveled the southeast on backroads all over Georgia, Alabama and Florida. She always had a story to tell of someone she met or some interesting sight she saw in her travels. They also began to travel abroad, Italy being one of their favorite places. During this time she also rediscovered her love of painting and began studying with some local Georgia artists, most notably the late Damon Carter. In the fall of 2019 Jennifer and John relocated to Huntsville, AL and they absolutely love living in north Alabama!
Jennifer has studied and worked in watercolor, pastel and acrylic, but these days works primarily in oil. She feels the best paintings tell a story, or they inspire the viewer to write their own story related to the image. She calls her work “Stories on Canvas” and usually has a story in mind when she begins a new painting. Her work is as broad as her interests but the paintings and stories she enjoys most involve her love of travel, her love of home, good wine and good friends
