Date: Wednesday, February 2 – Sunday, February 6, 2011

NOTE: Many may ask why in the world we would plan a trip in February! February is a slow time for NYC and discounts are plentiful! NYC’s “Paint the Town” promotion that time of year offers steep discounts to shows, restaurants, etc, etc, etc. When we took a trip in mid-Feb in the 90s . . . we never noticed the weather because we were having so much fun! Travel Insurance will be available to protect against trip cancellation because of inclement weather.

Hotel: Likely will be the artsy and eclectic “Roger Smith Hotel” (www.rogersmith.com) We are also looking at other alternatives.

Approx. cost: $1000 – $1200 / person (double occupancy) (Single supplement will be available as well as optional trip extension, etc).

NOTE: Our travel partners have quoted conservatively and expect the cost to actually be lower. After we determine the final group size, we will provide be actual amounts.

NOTE: Fees include airfare, transfers and hotel.

Group size: To get the best rates available, we need a group of approx. 35 – 40 participants. We already have a number of people who are “committed” so don’t wait. Let us know that you are interested.

Possible group activities: Our Exec. Dir. Laura Phillips (with her NYC and arts connections) is working on quality docent-led museum tours, a group city tour with group dinner event at end of tour, etc. In addition, we will provide plenty of opportunities prior to the trip for assistance with planning your agenda for shows and other activities.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see NYC with your friends from the Carnegie. Please email Noel King (noelking@noelking.com) or call (256-303-1177) to be added to our group of interested travelers. We will be sending out regular trip updates via an email system . . . so please provide your email address to Noel as soon as possible.

A water-media painter and an assemblist compliment each others works as they individually find beauty and inspiration in the old, the industrial, and the worn.

Dana Brown

Artist Statement

“I can’t explain it but after painting in water-media for about twenty years, I’m still fascinated by puddles of shimmering paint on paper and as eager as ever to start each day in the studio. Art has always been my great love but until I became a daily painter, I felt out of step – like I was living without rhythm or a common thread through my days. Making art is simply an essential part of my life.

My subjects tend to be structural with an emphasis on strong design. In my mechanical pieces, I enjoy the fact that all the parts have a purpose and do their job – hoses winding to their destination, bolts tightened securely, and engines ready to crank. Selfishly speaking, it is a secure place to spend the day, painting my way through the light and shadow patterns of a tractor engine.

A more recent challenge has been to express myself thru casein. Although it is also a water based medium, it can be used opaquely – so I’m able to lean on my abilities with transparency while pushing the same medium to semi-opaque and opaque. It’s a challenging medium that has tested my patience at times but overall, has improved my ability to handle paint and explore new ideas. The bumpy road to become adept with casein continues to shake up my routine – a very good thing when an artist has been working daily for twenty years.”

Scott Smith

Artist Statement

“I am influenced by the passage of time and its effects on structures, machinery, and
materials. These effects are the sources for the materials that I use in the assemblies. The found
materials are from residential, agricultural, and industrial sites. They represent to me a
contemporary archaeological study.
In my work I am collecting discarded wood and metal and using them to print the paper
material for the final collage. The work is about the relationship between the found materials, the
printed product, and all of those elements in the final assembly. These relationships may be based
on surface, color, texture, or the sites where the materials were found.
Although I feel that the final assembly is my reaction to visual elements, the sources for the
materials are from everyone around me. Because of this, the viewer may play the role of inadvertent
supplier to the final assembly.”

A North Carolina native, Clayton Bass has shown professionally in gallery and museum exhibitions for 26 years. His works are represented by galleries in Birmingham and Huntsville, and in private, corporate and museum collections in seven states. Five works are on permanent display at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis hotel. In 2000 his first New York solo exhibition opened at Space 504 Gallery on Broadway.

Recently his focus has been on several related bodies of work including The Dreaming Pool, Nature’s Gifts, The Sanctuary Series, Dawn and Dusk, and The Flint River Series inspired by forested river valleys and mountains of the southeastern U.S. Throughout his career, nature has informed his paintings, works on paper and sculptural pieces. The interplay of light and shadow is a recurring theme. Photography plays an important role, serving to capture compositions, light and details, translating into works that evolve beyond the source images.

A graduate of East Carolina University with a B.F.A. in painting and a minor in drawing, he also completed the Empire State College (SUNY) Studio Program in New York City where he apprenticed with painter Michael Goldberg.

Running parallel with creating art, Bass has enjoyed a museum career since 1989, beginning at the Carlos Museum at Emory University. After seven years as Executive Director of the Walter Anderson Museum, he accepted the position of President and CEO in 2002 of the Huntsville Museum of Art.

Bass enjoys living and hiking in the mountains south of Huntsville with his wife, a children’s author, and their two teenage children.
