October 1 – November 19, 2016 — An exhibit celebrating all the cultivators, makers and traditional craftsmen in Alabama featuring photography by Ashley Vaughn at White Rabbit Studios, handcrafted furniture by Wood Studio’s Randy Cochran and sons, Keith and Dylan Cochran and Barns & Mills, and the beautiful custom tableware from Tena Payne of Earthborn Pottery.
This exhibition brings together local craftsman and artists celebrating art from the natural elements of the land we live on and the pride of maintaining a rich heritage.
Ashley Vaughn, owner of White Rabbit Studio, Huntsville, AL, is a photoholic and a visual story teller. She first held a camera at a young age and was encouraged to “shoot what she loved” by her father, who taught her the workings on a camera – specifically, an Olympus OM10. Her passion for photography grew as she developed her own work in the high school darkroom. She has a working studio located on the first floor of Lowe Mill, studio #110.
Her inspiration for her farm to table exhibit, Farmacy, came from her journey to lead a nutritious and healthy lifestyle after her battle with an environmental cancer at the age of 15. She decided to turn her diet into 80% plant based. Ashley said, “While I always loved gardening, I had a new appreciation for produce and for the folks that dedicated their life to growing the nutrients our body needs. I wanted to connect with the farmers who are in control of my new food supply. I admire their hard work and my objective is to showcase the art that permeates their lifestyle.”
Tena Payne is the owner, instructor, and lead artist of Earthborn Studios, Leeds, Alabama. Her small pottery business has evolved over the years to what is now Earthborn Studios, Inc. with restaurant and retail installations around the country. Tena began selling her pottery to chefs after being commissioned to create a special line for 2012 James Beard Award winner, Chef Chris Hastings of Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, Alabama. Her serveware, dressed in one of her 24 different hand-mixed glazes, can be found at Sensi in the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas; Sushi Samba restaurants throughout New York, Miami, and London; and dozens of other establishments across the country.
Wood Studio is a family-owned and operated Alabama based company opened by Randy Cochran in 1986 in Decatur, AL. Currently Randy operates the office in Fort Payne and sons, Keith and Dylan run the shop in Arley, which is a custom woodworking design and fabrication service, specializing in small and medium scale residential and commercial projects.
They were the overall winner for the 2012 Made in the South Awards for Garden & Gun magazine for their Lookout Mountain Rocker—a signature piece that is hand-made with native woods. The frame of the rocker has minimalist lines that evoke both the old and the new and is covered in hand-stretched vegetable-dyed leather.
They are also known for their Beersheba Swing. Their version of this swing is based on a design that was popular during the mid to late 1800’s in and around Beersheba Springs, Tennessee. Designed to take advantage of a cooling summer breeze and hung by four mule harness trace chains. Perfect for conversation, contemplation, or an afternoon nap. Each signature swing is constructed using hand selected materials and time-proven, traditional joinery techniques.
Barns & Mills is dedicated to the reclamation of barns, mills, factories, churches, schools, homes, and other structures which were built during the 1800’s to early 1900’s. After deconstruction, they de-nail, re-saw, grade, and inventory the lumber for use as flooring, veneers, timber-framing, custom furniture, cabinetry and millwork. They also salvage, clean, and re-sell antique brick and stone. Barns & Mills is a full-service company featuring a 12,000 square foot cabinet shop with an in-house design and build team. Lead by Vice President of Operations, Brian Robinson and Engineering and Construction manager Darryl Terry, Barns & Mills is located in Decatur.
