Arts Aflutter

By • Dec 16th, 2008 • Category: Calendar, Next Event

In the next few months, Decatur will be the site of Arts Aflutter- the most fun, the largest, and the coolest public outdoor art event Decatur has ever experienced. (See Arts Aflutter will celebrate our area’s diverse and creative visual artists and the “rebirth” of Decatur’s downtown. This event will encourage laughter, thought, and an appreciation of the arts all while attracting residents and visitors alike to Decatur’s beautiful downtown area

Modeled after the wildly successful “Cows on Parade” held in Chicago and similar programs all across the United States (visit, Arts Aflutter will feature larger-than-life, three-dimensional, metal butterflies—painted, decorated, adorned, embellished and bejeweled by North Alabama’s leading artists. In the Chicago event, cows were seen flying over the moon, dressed as movie stars, sleeping in bunny slippers. What might happen to the butterflies in the hands of Decatur artists? We can only imagine! Butterflies were chosen to represent the revitalization of our historic downtown district and to symbolize the rebirth of imagination that emerges each time a piece of art is created.

“Everyone wins: businesses, artists, individual sponsors and civic organizations. Everyone who participates wins! This opportunity to support the arts AND draw attention and traffic to the historic downtown area is a major boost for the revitalization effort.” states Rick Paler, director of the Downtown Revitalization Authority.

When Arts Aflutter bursts forth from the cocoon in the early Spring of 2009, the butterflies will be in public places in and around Decatur’s historic districts and downtown parks, each with a plaque that identifies the butterflies’ sponsor and artist. We envision butterflies on street corners, walls, trees, lampposts—anywhere you may find a butterfly!
